Memorable winter stays
Winter can’t keep you from having fun at Driftaway Lakehouse. The property is winterized to withstand the harsh Canadian temperatures. But we know the Muskoka Region can experience tons of snow, so we’re encouraging short, weekend getaways. The local water taxi service also runs an air boat service, transporting up to four people to the island per visit, so plan accordingly.
Here are some ways we recommend you enjoy the property and its surrounding areas in winter. There’s plenty to do outdoors or you can just stay on the property and enjoy its many amenities, such as hot tub, entertainment system, and more.
Cross-Country Skiing & Snowshoeing
These are true Canadian winter activities that combines invigorating exercise with the beauty of snow-covered landscapes. The crisp winter air and the pristine, unspoiled scenery are unmatched and will rejuvenate you. You can take an air taxi to a nearby spot for a change of surroundings to explore the trails that go for several kilometres.
Snowmobiling
The mainland has plenty of amazing and well-kept trails that are used by local snowmobiling clubs. We do not provide snowmobiles, but feel free to rent some on the mainland or bring your own up from the city. This adrenaline-pumping winter sport lets you enjoy the Canadian winterscape like no other. If the conditions are right, you can ride straight from the marina to the cottage.
Ice fishing
When the Georgian Bay is frozen over, one of the best ways of spending time outside is by setting up an ice fishing hut for the catch of the day. Remember, you’ll need a fishing licence and your own equipment. Ice hut rentals are available in the area.
Ice Skating
Skating or playing a game of shinny on an ice rink atop a frozen lake encapsulates the essence of winter wonder in Canada. This activity gets everyone up and out and transforms serene natural landscapes into vibrant arenas for frozen fun. If you want more company while skating, you can always go to the Honey Harbour Skating Rink on mainland.
